She is from Brooklyn, NY, and her experiences since coming here have differed greatly from her life at home. I had the opportunity to sit down with her and talk a little more about how being here has affected her life.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is the biggest change you\u2019ve encountered since being here?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Less stores, a lot less options for food, and a lot of hills. The environment is very different. There\u2019s less diversity here as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do you feel happy here?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has its pros and cons, the pros being that it\u2019s a lot safer here. There\u2019s more freedom for me personally; I\u2019m able to go outside more often because it\u2019s safer here. I can do as I please a lot more. For cons, things aren\u2019t as close here. There isn\u2019t a wide array of stores or fast food. I\u2019m also not used to the weather\u2014 it gets pretty cold. The food here is different from what I\u2019m used to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How big of an adjustment did you need to make?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a huge adjustment, but it\u2019s still pretty big. Learning to be completely independent is a new experience; it\u2019s not all bad but it\u2019s difficult. Getting used to the food here was difficult as well; it ties back into what I was saying about the environment and the weather, it takes up a big part of the adjustment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What do you miss about home?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My family, the culture. I miss the food, really miss the food. (Laughs) I don\u2019t get to see my family as much anymore, and that\u2019s been difficult. I can\u2019t see them very easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What\u2019s your favorite thing here?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think I have two favorite things: I like the freedom. And the people I get to meet here. People around here are pretty kind; I don\u2019t have to worry about my safety here. Back home, it can be dangerous to walk around, and here I can do that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>On vacations, what\u2019s the first thing you do when you get home?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visit my family, first of all. Then food. Always food! (Laughing) Eating the food I miss, like moros, mang\u00fa, lots of Dominican food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do you think that being here has changed you as a person?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yeah, it\u2019s changed me in ways like how I speak, I feel like I have to speak more formally here\u2014it\u2019s not how I\u2019m used to speaking. I feel like it\u2019s changed my personality too, I\u2019m not as social as I used to be. Sometimes I feel like I can\u2019t connect with people here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Where do you like the most on campus?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My room. It\u2019s my safe space, and I\u2019ve always felt a little better inside. I feel like being inside a lot back home has carried over here; I\u2019m more of a homebody.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What are you looking forward to most next year?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m excited to move into a new dorm! I\u2019m excited to see what it\u2019s like living with more people. And more events!
