Luke Wesneski is the head coach for Alfred University softball (AUSB). Beginning his career in Alfred as head coach in 2016. Since becoming head coach at Alfred, Wesneski became the first softball coach in program history to win two Empire 8 Championships.
How has AUSB prepared for their 10-game stretch in Florida?
The preseason is always about getting ready for a 40-game schedule. So, the things that we concentrate on most are conditioning, communication and fundamentally sound softball.
What are the struggles AUSB faced while training?
Being in western New York, we are limited to indoor practices, but try to keep things as game like as possible and keep things moving at a high pace. We do take advantage of any outdoor time we get and have been fortunate to get a couple days on the field and one day on the turf and we still have a week and a half before we leave for Florida. So, maybe we’ll get out a few more times before taking the dirt down south.
What does each coach contribute to the team?
I have the best coaching staff anyone can ask for. Coach Cassie is in her third year with the program and knows it inside and out. Coach Sarah is in her second year as pitching coach and has done fantastic work with our pitchers and catchers. New to the staff this year is former player Ashley Lugo, and she will be working primarily with the infield and hitters. As a former All-American at Alfred, her drive and passion for the game is unmatched, and we look forward to having her in the dugout with us this year.
How is your own experience, going to contribute to team 31’s season?
With this being my 9th year in Alfred, I realize that each team is different, and each team has different needs that need addressed and other areas that may need less attention. Team 31 is special, just like the 30 that came before it. Our goals remain the same as we want to play our best softball every day, and not just at the end of the season. Our preparation does not change, and our end goal remains the same – to play in an NCAA tournament.
What are you and the team looking forward to this season?
We are excited about our incoming class as well as the veteran leadership with our returners. We have girls that know how to win, have won and other girls that are chomping at the bit to win. It’s a great combination to have. It’s my job to make sure I prepare them for everything that will be thrown at them this year and to keep reminding them, and myself daily, that we get to play this great game that we love every day and not to take that for granted! It’s a privilege to play college sports at any level and you only get 4 years, so make everyday count.
What are you looking to get our of the week long tournament in Florida?
As we plan for our 10-game trip to Florida for some sunny weather and dirt, our focus is on conditioning, focus and playing for each other. If we can play 14 selfless innings daily with our minds and body in the right place, we can play with any team. My goal is to make sure these 19 girls believe that every day!
Is Florida going to change AUSB anyway?
The goal in Florida is to find out who we are and who we want to be! If we can do that, we will be heading in the right direction upon our return to Alfred! Go Saxons!
